Scan leveling

After loading scans without 3D elements the buttons for leveling appear automatically. The leveling compensates mismatches of the scanner alignment on-site. The leveling aligns the panorama horizontally. Several options are available:

The button (level the floor automatically) evaluates measurement points at the floor for automatic leveling. This option should be taken in to account when more than three measurement points are available and the height difference is not seriously.

The button (level the ceiling automatically) evaluates the measurement points at the ceiling and creates a ceiling plane.

The automatic function simplifies the leveling but can also cause issues.

The default value for the leveling is set to 10 cm. All measurement point which are in the area of 10 cm are taken into account. The search area can be extended which requires a restart of the leveling process. In accuracy will appear if the search are is too large.

After the leveling a pop up window with the leveling results will appear.

In this cases the search area was set to 70 cm a unusual large search area. Nevertheless three measurement points were detected and a correction angle of -10.15° was set. This means that  the scanner has a perpendicular deviation of 19.62°. This setup of the scanner is too crooked so that the automatic leveling can not be used.

Every leveling process can be restarted by clicking the button [New leveling]

The following pop-up appears:

As described in the pop-up all created planes will be deleted and the current modelling process is no longer available.

This pop-up shows an accurate automatic leveling . The number of considered measured points (31) is high. The correction angle of 0.06° indicates that the Scanner was positioned ideal.

Measurement points can be selected manually by double clicking. Measurement points are hightlighted in the panorama as green dots. The color of the selected dot is changed from green to red.  Each selected do will be mentioned in the list “selected measurement spots”. For the initiation of the leveling three measurement spots are required. Additional spots are possible.

With the button [Level the wall manually]the leveling can be processed at a wall. It is mandatory that the wall is aligned perpendicular to the horizon and three laser measurement spots have to be selected which are located on the wall.

This option is recommend if no horizontal planes with at least three measurement spots are available.

For the leveling it is recommended to select  three measurment spots which are as distanced as possible to each other and are not located on the same line. Afterwards the leveling can be initiated by clicking the button [Level the plane manually].The following pop-up appears:

prefered  a ceiling or floor plance can be creatd based on the selected measuring points or on the selected and additional measuring points. The option additional points selected points indicates that all measuring spots which are located closed by the plane  are taken into account.

By clicking on the button [continue without leveling]  the leveling process will be skipped. This is recommend if no 3D modelling is needed.

Notice: The roomscanner HottScan HS-1 has to be aligned appr. perpendicular. This reduces the on-site time as a proper alignment is no longer required

Modelling

After the leveling the HottScan Modeller displays the the buttons for the  3D modelling:

The buttons from left to right have the following meaning:

Horizontal ground plane:    A horizontal ground plane is created. One measuring spot has to be selected.

Horizontal ceiling plane:  A horizontal ceiling plane is created. One measuring spot has to be selected.

Vertical wall plane:  A vertical wall plane is created. Two measuring spots have to be selected.

Individual planes:    An individual plane is created. Three measuring spots have to be selected.

Construction of planes and openings

The buttons for the surfaces on the right side are described. The openings behave in the same way when it comes to commands and sequences. However, an existing surface must be selected in the 3D navigator.

Rectangle two points

A surface in the form of a rectangle is constructed on the active plane with two click points. The first point can be any corner point of the rectangle and the second point is the point diagonally opposite the first point on the rectangle. If the active plane is horizontal the rectangle is modelled along the main axis of the coordinate system. The main axes are displayed using the grid of the horizontal planes.

Rectangle three points

A surface in the shape of a rectangle is constructed on the active plane with three click points. The first and second click points form the basis of the rectangle while the third point determines its height. Unlike the rectangle with two points, this rectangle can have any position

Triangle

A surface in the shape of a triangle is constructed on the active plane with three click points.

Polygon

A surface in the shape of a polygon is constructed on the active plane with several click points. The polygon must have at least three and a maximum of 250 click points. The clickpoints should not generate overlapping planes.

The backspace key enables the removal of click points. The + key adds new click points.

Circle

A surface in the shape of a circle is constructed on the active plane with two click points. The distance between the click points corresponds to the diameter of the circle.

All construction lines and planes intersections can set visible or invisible

All measurement lines and angle dimensioning can be set visible or invisible

An axis of abscissas  appears when a polygonal modelling process is in progress. This feature enhances the alignment of the polygon to the room  to 90° degrees.

Rooms with several scans

Several scans can be assigned to one room if all scans will be stored in one folder (see illustration below).

If the button [Room 3D Model room] is clicked the selected scans and all other rooms will be loaded.

3D-Navigator

In the 3D-Navigator levels of  the hierachy can be dropped down by clicking „+“and fold up by clicking „-„.For each scan or sub room exist for main structures:

Positons, single measurements, notes and 3D elements

Sub rooms

The tree for active sub rooms can be extended. All other sub rooms are displayed as additional part.

Positions

The positions mentioned in „Pos 0 180/60 – 2,53“ indicated the capturing position of the scanner on-site. The position indication start with 0 and continues with ascending order. After the number is the horizontal and vertical angle indicated devided by a slash. After the dash appears the distance indication [m].

If the laser could not detect a positon on a certain surface- e.g. strong reflecting materials or transparent surfaces- no digits will be displayed. The positions is not available for the modelling process.

Based on the caputred distance and camera angel (FoV) are 3D measuring points calculated which are the basis for the 3D modelling process. The measuring points are colored green.. Measuring points  (green balls) vary in their diameter according to their distance. The closer the measuring point is the larger the diameter is displayed.

In the 3D-Navigator a position is selected with a mouse click. The field of view is automatically focused and the measuring point is shown in the center of the field. In addition the measuring point is highlighted in blue color.

Measuring points in the panorama can be selected with a double click close by the desired measuring point. Selected measuring points are highlighted in red color. The selection can be deactivated with the ESC button on the keyboard. In addition a selected measuring spot can be disabled with another double click.

The visibiblity of single measuring spots can be enabled or disabled by clicking on the check box.

The image of the positioned will be opened with a double click in the installed default image viewer

Single/individual positions

Single positions have the same intention and behaviour as the default measuring points. Single measuring positions are displayed in a bright green color. Single measuring spots can be generated with the remote control function (see tab remote control). The generated spots will be added to the existing scan and increased the amount of available measuring points. Single measuring points can be generated on planes where no measuring point is available.

Notes

Notes can be added to the panorama at the remote control tab or at the 3D Navigator. The notes are displayed as colored cube. The notes can contain details about planes, elements, text or misc. The notes can also be assigned to modelled elements when the modelling process is finished

3D Elements

In the hierachic structure „3D-Elements“ are all modelled planes and openings displayed.

The modelling process requires first the definition where planes are located afterwards the modelling of the planes and the existing openings.

Planes and openings can be selected in the 3D-Navigator. The field of view can be automatized when the functionality  is enabled

Right-click on an element and a context menu dependent on the element appears in the 3D project navigator. In this context menu you can copy an element, change element allocation or delete elements. Unterhalb des 3D-Navigators befinden sich Funktionen zur Anzeige von Werten, dem Ändern von Zuordnungen und Drucken der Screenshots.

Functions to display values and change allocations can be found below the 3D navigator.

The dimensions of the selected 3D element are displayed on the left. At the top of the list is the maximum width, then the maximum height of the 3D element. Next is the perimeter, fol-lowed by the gross and net surface area. The gross surface area is the surface area of the 3D element not including cut-out areas such as openings. If the selected 3D element does not have any openings, the net area surface is not displayed. If there are openings, the net surface area is indicated. The value is always smaller than the gross surface area.

The type and geometric shape of the selected 3D elements are displayed on the right. The type can be changed; this function corresponds to the change in the context menu. You can also enter comments about a 3D element here.

According to the type of geometry different editing functions are available. Rectangular planes can be moved at the edges and corner points. Corner points of polygonal planes can be added, deleted and moved. Circle´s radius can be adjusted. The editing functions are also available for columns and volumes.

The [Print] Button starts a print dialog: →

The printer, the sheet format, the sheet orientation and the print resolution can be selected in the dialog. The edges can be adjusted as well as the printing in black / white and in color. All screenshots that have been made are displayed in the list and the screenshots to be printed can be selected with an option tick. The screenshots are automatically deleted when the program is closed.

The [Save] button manually saves the current progress of the work. A security prompt appears to save the 3D model when a new scan is loaded or the program is closed.

Press the [New leveling] button to restart the 3D modelling of the scan including levelling. All existing 3D elements are deleted when a restart occurs so a security prompt appears:

This button is only useful if you notice that the levelling performed previously did not lead to any meaningful results
